Druids aren’t healers?

Posted by: Gahlok In: General

I’ve been having a blast lately.

For some reason on the runs I’ve been doing, usually when something good drops, I lose the roll. Lets see, five Travelers Backpack dropped yesterday, before yesterday another Pumpkin Bag dropped in Dire Maul (North) and, last, but not least, a Krol Blade dropped in Upper Blackrock Spire two days ago. Kroll Blade can sell for around 600g or so (maybe more?). Yeah, I lost on all of ‘em, and for some reason most greeds I lose too… But, eventually my luck will change (hopefully! I need to get my druid an epic mount).

A few days ago someone was doing the quest the Order Must Be Restored, which is also known as the part in which you have to kill Blightcaller. Nathanos Blightcaller, for those that don’t know, is a NPC located in Eastern Plaguelands. More like an elite NPC, he summons skeletons when he’s being hit (bunch of them), and also has two elite dogs. That’s not the hard part, at all: Blightcaller is also “horde” sided, which means that horde can stand besides him and he won’t do anything at all, he also gives them quests. The last time I tried this quest, with my rogue, we tried to “crowd control” the skeletons, that didn’t work too well, we also had a bunch of horde messing with the quest.

This time, tho, was different. I heard a while ago that the trick with this quest was just to get nutts and do pure DPS on him. No strategy, no tactics.

And we got him! There weren’t horde there so that helped a lot. I was very amazed of how fast he dropped. The raid had like 25 or so people, and only two died during the fight.

Lets go now to the reason of the title of this entry. For a long time I’ve been getting upset, and sad, that even when I’m inside a raid, people don’t consider druids as healers. It’s kinda common to listen “we need another priest, we don’t have healers”, while I’m in the group. Sometimes I get pissed off. For the non-believers, yesterday we were in a Baron run. Just before the boss, something dropped and I called need on it. The priest, called Hempy, wanted to use need too. Hempy got two needs and a set before that, while I didn’t get anything at all at that point. The sad thing was that Hempy didn’t want to give me a break or a chance, and becase the raid agreed that it was fair that I could get the need, the priest got pissed and left (OH NOES, PRIEST LEFT, WE GONNA DIEE!!!).

Believe it or not, we did Baron with 9 members, and only a druid as main healer

Absolutely no deaths at all.

When I asked for a Healing Done meter

Later on, last night, I was on another run, Stratholme, Scarlet Monastery Side. There were two priests, one had like four epics, the other one was… kinda busy thinking if he was going to reroll horde again… lol!! The same person that was busy thinking about rerolling also said, at the beginning of the run, that I had to go DPS because it was “common sense” that with two priests, another healer wouldn’t be needed at all. So

WTFPWND! By the way, the person that was too busy with the rerolling thing (has been horde, then alliance, rinse and repeat) is #3…

I could also upgrade on that run!

The whole point of this is: don’t overestimate druids, we might not have instant healing spells like priests, but we got our own stuff. I know very good priests, but then, there are also other priests that believe that they are the best and everything else is not worthy at all.

I guess I’m lucky - on our server most people know what great healers druids can be. Personally, I’m a warrior, so I experience that healing first-hand :)
I’ve met quite a few priests who were by far outhealed by druids. Sucky priests at that then :) and on the other hand, I’ve met druids who sucked hard at healing. I think that one time in BRD, the druid never used a single heal over time on me. He obviously had no clue, and I only afterwards realized the paladin had done about 3 times as much healing (!)…

Anyway, good luck with further drops. I did a 5 man baron run just this weekend, took forever (we did both the scarlet and ud sides in that 5 man team, even killed the scarlet boss with 4 because our mage had a DC - that was awesome) but was really rewarding, quest-wise and all :-P - if you get a group together in your guild, you should try that for yourself :)

I feel your pain.

I have a Holy/Prot Pally decked out with int and healing gear in raids. I have beaten good priests at healing in UBRS. I have main-healed a 5-man Baron run. Funny thing is, when a cloth wearer gets in trouble, and my BoP is on a timer, I switch to off-tank and grab aggro in like a second (Judge Seal of Fury, cast Seal of Fury, works every time, mobs HATE that).

I think that is what the role of Pally was intended to be. And those who don’t see it that way should switch to Super Mario brothers or something.

PUGs that don’t see druids as healers - don’t waste your time, my man.

Our small guild in Proudmoore has an awesome healing druid. Even with the 1.18 patch (where he respecc’d to Feral) he easily out heals many holy priests. I’m especially curious to see how he does when he gets his priest up to 60.

Also you need some haxxor dice or something! Better luck with the rolls.

WTF? Our guild on frostwolf every druid except a veteran went feral after patch 1.8….No druids in my guild wants to heal…The only veteran left has 46 resto, heh.
Anyway, I am glad that a healing druid is still around. By the way what is your spec? Don’t tell me you are feral! :D

Hey, I just came across this blog while surfing from “work”. I play a druid and a priest as two of my 3 lvl 60 characters, my druid was my first character, I then retired him, and brought him back to life a month ago as my main all over again. I’m in an advanced guild doing end game raiding content, not that this makes my opinion more important but it definitely adds perspective. The one thing I want to comment on is first of all your healing meter doesn’t mean anything, and if you have sucha high gap in healing it means most of your healing went to waste. Wasted heals are as bad as no heals in long fights because a druid that has a 7000 mana pool is going to run out of mana sooner than a priest with a 10K mana pool. I’m not sure what kind of server you play on that has a negative outlook on druids, but restoration druids are sought after on almost all servers I have been in contact with. I can assure you on my realms druids are very well respected and all raids always want one priest and one druid present, as they work good together. In end game content, the abilities that separate a priest and a druid start to not matter that much and they both start having a very similar role. Druids rock, your server is a bit nubbish if u ask me.
