I want my FPS back!

Posted by: Gahlok In: General

For some strange reason lately I’ve been lagging badly; not referring to internet lag, but more like graphic lag. A perfect example would be running to Ironforge’s Bank and freezing on the way there. It shouldn’t be happening, considering that my new computer (iMac 20″ 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) is new and when I first played WoW on it, even with max settings, I wouldn’t lag. This time I had to lower the settings and I would still lag.

What could it be? Addons, was the possible answer. Now, I don’t have a ton of addons, but I do have a number of them. After taking out the WTF, WDB and Interface folders, I managed to get my FPS back. I could also replace a few of them with better things. I opened a thread in WoW forums about it, but basically, after cleaning, I ended up with this:

CThunWarner
avbars
BattlefieldCommander2
TitanMoney
oRA2
TitanHonorPlus
TitanClock
Titan
TitanPerformance
!OmniCC
TitanAmmo
TitanRepair
Blizzard_AuctionUI
ItemRack
Blizzard_BindingUI
MonkeyQuest
TitanCoords
Blizzard_CombatText
UseByName
BonusScanner
CharacterProfiler
Decursive
TitanItemBonuses
BigWigs
MonkeyLibrary
sRaidFrames
TitanBag
CleanPlayerFrame
TitanXP

I can’t remember exactly what I took out, but some of the stuff was this

DruidBar
Scrolling Combat Text
Scrolling Combat Text - Damage
SWStats
Pe rl Classic Unit Frames (I got to separate the first word because my server blocks it for some weird reason)
HitsMode
CT_RaidAssist
Natur EnemyCastBar
MobInfo-2

On the thread someone posted a nice tip about CT_RaidAssist, which basically was replacing it with two addons, which weight a lot less: oRA2 and sRaidFrames. To tell the truth I mainly used CT_RaidAssist for the raid frames, since I already use BigWigs for the boss announcing stuff. This is how sRaidFrames looks like, after I changed a couple of things.

I’m not sure if you can notice it, but some names (like Katherinee, Stanima, Patricless, Fruitloop and Touf, among others) are slightly faded, it’s because sRaidFrames has a range checker, and I always wanted to have that in my CT_Raid ^_^ It a couple of other cool things ^_^ Another new addon I’m using, which is mainly for player/party frames, is one called Clean Player Frame, which is very simple: it just modifies the default one with a couple of extra stuff. It might not be fancy as the one I used before, but it’s a lot lighter.

Hmm, thinking about it, I might change Decursive for another addon that is called Detox. Anyway, I could also lower the Memory Usage, from over 20MB (or so) to 16MB, which is pretty good IMO.

Other than that, it seems I’m back to business :)

[item]Cryptfiend Silk Cloak[/item] — Anub
[item]Desecrated Wristguards[/item] — Anub
[item]Widow’s Remorse[/item] — Faerlina
[item]Desecrated Bracers[/item] — Faerlina
[item]Desecrated Sabatons[/item] — Razuvious
[item]Iblis, Blade of the Fallen Seraph[/item] — Razuvious

That’s a run I made a couple of days ago (they also took down Maexxna, but I wasn’t there, hehehe), right now I’m applying to a guild called Pulse. There’s some awesome people I know in that guild, like Phigan (noobest rogue ever), which I knew in my very first guild in the game, and Mitril (very prominent member of the French Mafia). So far everything seems nice.

Slightly moving offtopic, these days are national holidays on my country ^_^ Ohh, and something is happening in 11 days;)

I used to have alot of graphic lag problems too and took off most of my addons. This didnt fix it all the way but then I turned off sound and it made it alot faster. Usually I listen to music while playing anyways so never really cared about sound.

I have a ‘decent’ computer, not saying the specs I run them on low, I have addons, mabey alot. But I have been experciencing a real FPS drop, I found it to be the addons PLUS Alt Tabbing alot during raids or in general play. When I simply closed WoW and opened it up again it was smooth until I started alt tabbing again.

Thats what happens to me anyway.

As you started off with BigWigs, oRA2 and sRaidFrames, why not convert all your AddOns to Ace2 based version? Just give it a try, you WILL notice a great difference in performance. Start at wowace.com, grab your files at wowace.com/files/ and look into the forums for lists giving you ace2 alternatives for non-ace addons (like sRaidFrames is for CT_RaidAssist).

@neXter: I tried Squishy (or something like that, it makes the map a square instead of a circle) and fubar and didn’t like them :P
With the map thingie IDK what happened but the map got placed in the center and I couldn’t move it, and with fubar setting it up seemed rather complicated (at least compared to TitanPanel).

I have a 20″ iMac Intel and noticed severe lag lately also. I run CT Raid mods and a few others. I need to clean it up especially with the new patch and start from ground zero because it shouldn’t be this slow.

Looking at this new patch they claim to have doubled the frame rate for iMacs, haven’t been back to IF to verify this but I hope it was addressed properly. But new bugs were introduced, I don’t think they QA the Mac software as good as the PC stuff :\
